Going back in to employment after maternity leave not being a feasible option, I had to do something to keep my mind ticking over. Now I was quite happy being a stay at home mum and I don’t think there is anything wrong with it or being a working mum, we all have to do what is best for our family but for me I needed something that was mine. Something I could concentrate on whilst James was at work and Ailsa slept. That is why I created Being Mrs Lynch, I needed an outlet and it was a great way to connect with other people, my readers and other bloggers and I have made some fabulous friends along the way. However I don’t make any money from the blog and financial freedom is something I have always craved. Of course James and I make massive financial decisions together and I’m not going to go out and blow all our money on clothes and make-up but I always feel guilty buying a latte or a new coat when it isn’t money I have personally earned.
With us moving back to Scotland and James giving up his job our financial situation is different, we are both technically unemployed right now and although we have savings in the bank we can live off and staying with James parents rent free, we need a way to bring in some money whilst James job hunts. After watching and cheering on my Sister-in-law whilst she set up her own business last year, she sparked something of an idea in me. Why can’t I do the same? And now almost a year after her and very much with her help and support I am setting up my own business in Social Media. Blogging has been a wonderful stepping stone and I have learned some amazing skills along the way. I have so much I can offer and maybe you do too!
Do you have any skills you can offer other people, maybe your an amazing book keeper, maybe you are a crafter or have some other wonderful skill you can offer. Well why not go ahead and offer it. You may have friends or family who can use your skill and pay you for your time. It is how I started, by providing Social Media Management to my friend starting her own business. I got the experience of managing someone else’s social media and she got use of my skills and knowledge that I had built up through blogging and research and now I am building my business to offer my services to others and it is the best decision I have made. I can work around Ailsa, I can work from home when she is in bed asleep or do a quick half hour whilst James baths her. I can pop out to a coffee shop whilst she spends time with her Daddy or Grandparents and I can spend as much quality time as I can with her. Of course being Self-employed means I am responsible for bringing in my own business and I’m not guaranteed an income but the flexibility for me is worth it. It could be something you start as a sideline to your employment, whilst your on maternity leave or start working on whilst your a stay at home mum like I was.
It takes courage but I say go for it you never know what might happen, becoming my own boss is the best thing I have ever done for my career and I love what I am creating for myself.
